On the other side of the soundtrack: composing our own music.

Part 1

Hello friends,

My name is Andru and I am a mixing engineer and music producer at Floatosphere Videos, as well as my personal projects DJ Nagval, Esthetic Dreams, and several others. In following posts, I will explain how to obtain music suitable for your project without blowing a hole in your budget.

Let us begin

So, your video is ready, but it lacks a music track? There are several options to go with:

1. Find royalty free music online, for example here

2. Buy ready-made favourite tracks at specialized websites like these ones:

3. Order it from me (ha ha ha, I just could not help but advertise myself!)

4. COMPOSE MUSIC BY YOURSELF

Last option is exactly what I am talking about.

Imaging a video project complemented by music written by you! “I don’t have musical education”, you will think. “So, it’s not an option”. Right? Wrong! Move it from the bottom. No, I do not deny that specialized education would help you very, very much in this matter. But I also want to say that Hans Zimmer, Vangelis, Dustin O'Halloran or many other well- known composers have no formal music education.

What they really have is love to music, great desire to express themselves, and indestructible spirit. These lead them to creating legendary compositions and writing wonderful music.

If you think you possess all these qualities and even a little bit more, then welcome on board!

What is the advantage of composing your own music for your own project?

First, you know your video project like nobody else. You know its sensual background, its features, points of attention, accents, and the main idea itself. Sometimes to find a suitable melody on third-party resources is more time consuming and nerve wrecking than if you compose the music yourself. It is without considering timing, accents, and other aspects, which may simply not coincide in the music you found. I have been in such situations at the beginning of my career many times and it was very frustrating.

Second, you simply save your hard-earned cash, by not paying for the license to use a third-party track.

What are the downsides? As in all endeavours, not everything will go smoothly at once. There is a learning curve here. Some of your music will sound flat, some will be completed incorrectly. You maybe even spend some sleepless nights trying to find the right melody. But when you do find it, you will feel so rewarded!

If you think it worth a try, then welcome to the world of music creation!

To be continued...
